Howlite is made up of hydrous calcium borate and often creates irregular nodules that looks like cauliflower heads. Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral [Ca2B5SiO9(OH)5] that usually occurs in sedimentary rock formatios. Howlite has a marble-like appearance, that is rather white and has gray or brown veins running through it.

Howlite was discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada and is named as “silico-boro-calcite” after the Canadian geologist and mineralogist Henry How. It came to Henry How’s initial attention as a nuisance since it was harder to mine than the gypsum they were after. It was renamed as Howlite by James Dwight Dana, an American geologist and mineralogist.

Howlite is a porous stone that can absorb dye well, which is why it’s often used to imitate other gems, such as turquoise, red coral, or lapis lazuli. Nowadays, honest gem traders always declare any special treatment to the stone. It’s structure is monoclinic which measures only 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.
